I'm Beth Rawlins, founder of Pie Heart Studio, a brand and web design studio based in the UK. Most of what I talk about comes down to one observation: a lot of genuinely excellent people look far less credible online than they are in real life.

I spend my working life helping brilliant, established, ambitious experts close the gap between how good they actually are and how good they look to someone who's just heard about them and decided to Google them.

I talk about presence over performance. If you want to get your work out into the world, attract bigger opportunities and make more impact, of course you have to be visible online. But that doesn’t mean you need to become a content creator, post daily, or develop an Instagram persona to be taken seriously.

You do need your existing online presence to be coherent, consistent, and credible. You do need well presented, easily accessible proof of your expertise. And yes, you do need some kind of personal brand (just not in the way you’re thinking).

I'm not going to tell you to start doing dance trends on TikTok. I'm going to tell you why you don’t need to, and what actually matters instead.
